Top 10 common mistakes novice website designers make

Web Level Up has a lot of clients who have created their own websites using Vista Print site builders, 1and1, Moonfruit, and other platform-based site builders. We also work with people who use dreamweaver, photoshop, and others. This article is targeted at graphic designers who create websites in Photoshop, and then give it to clients to upload. It was hard for me to choose a title.

1. Cross-browser Compatibility

There is a problem when Photoshop mock-ups are only fixed in height and width. However, an internet browser will be dependant on the dimensions that the user has set. Backgrounds and other elements can cause problems.

A professional web design agency will know all about cross browser compatibility. All websites will work on Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. No matter how large the monitor is, the website will still look the same on any normal-sized monitor.

No matter what you do, don’t try to restrict the browser’s behavior. One time, a designer asked me to open a fixed-dimension browser window in order for their design to work. It wasn't the browser that was the problem.

2. Jumping to assumptions about the user's experience

It doesn't matter if your 22-inch monitor has 1920x1080 resolution. However, this does not mean that everyone using your website will have the exact same setup and equipment. If your website isn't properly built and has incorrect cross browser compatibility settings, your website won't work correctly. Our world is also 21st century. Many people who use the internet daily are on the move and are using mobile phones and tablets to access it. Your website won't work properly if your cross browser compatibility settings are incorrect.

3. Sub-pixel mock-ups

A 72 DPI screen will not show the same 300 DPI graphic mock-up. Browsers display whole pixels. You cannot render half of a pixel.

4. No understanding font stacks

Although typography is easier to do online, it is still difficult to use every font. Some browsers and OSes may not support the font you choose. Commercial fonts are not allowed to be distributed. Some fonts are not compatible with the screen, even though they look great in PhotoShop at 10.5pt sharp.

5. Use relevant H1, H2, and H3 tags, among other things

Many website owners want their website to look great. However, search engines must be able read text to understand what is important. This is a typical example. A heading that uses fancy fonts and effects can only be created in photoshop. The image will then be placed on your website. Although Alt Tags can be used to tell google what the image is, it's not as powerful as a set H1 tags.

You should also consider whether you will use fancy images at page's top to let people know where they are. If your website is 250 pages in depth, you will need 250 title images for each page. That is not fun!

6. Use Links to Help Users Navigate Your Site

Links can be very useful for optimizing each page. It tells Google which pages are most important and what content is most relevant to them. Web Level Up would include footer links to the following: Web Design, Web Designers, Graphic Developers and Local SEO. This is our specialty and all of our content revolves around these four main titles.

7. Animation or effects

Photoshop can make it difficult to show HTML, CSS and Javascript effects like rollovers or animations when you use them on a website. It is a smart idea to understand the client's expectations and what they want from their website when you manage client expectations.

8. The technologies are not appreciated by many.

HTML is the same as Flash.

Flash can do things that are nearly impossible with HTML5 (although HTML5 hopes that this will change). You can also do things in HTML which are impossible in Flash. If you don't discuss the technologies with both the client and developer, you're asking for trouble.

9. Logo Design

A professional logo is an essential part of any website. It can make it look great or terrible. Don't try to create a logo if you don't have any graphic design skills. I recommend that you hire a professional to design your logo. The look and feel of your website will be influenced greatly by the logo. I recommend that you have it designed before you start building it.

10. Get involved

A website for a trade such as plumber, electrician, locksmith, etc., I recommend great call-to-action features. This will increase your conversion rate and give you a healthier return.
